Project Summary
Environmental pressure in port areas and in nearby urban areas is high owing to emissions from ships, port machinery and transport to/from the port areas.
Alternative fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol are proposed as low-carbon clean fuels for marine transport in port areas.
The overall objective of SUPERALFUEL is to support the increase of Short Sea Shipping in the Adriatic-Ionian Sea basin as a sustainable transport mode through joint developed actions, including the promotion of the use of alternative fuels (hydrogen, ammonia, methanol) and last/first-mile environmentally friendly solutions. It will demonstrate the sustainability of alternative fuels at ports, for bunkering, fuel supply, and for ship propulsion.
SUPERALFUEL involves five ports of the IPA ADRION region, namely Piraeus, Bari, Koper, Bar, and Zodar, together with transport institutes and education and research organizations focused on alternative fuels.
SUPERALFUEL will establish harmonized guidelines for safety and risk assessment of alternative fuels in the IPA Adriatic-Ionian area, by sharing experience and practices derived from safety directives applied in conventional facilities.
SUPERALFUEL will develop a solution for training stakeholders in the areas of hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol safety and sustainability, based on a Massive Online Open Course platform.
SUPERALFUEL will create a network focused on sustainability, safety, and training for alternative fuel bunkering operations and other maritime activities.
The main beneficiaries of the project will be regional, national, and port authorities, shipping companies, education and training organizations, and SMEs. The project will contribute to sustainable transport and mobility solutions by supporting the safe use of hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol, as alternative green fuels, in the IPA ADRION area.
Five ports will benefit from SUPERALFUEL in the following issues:
- Preparation to adopt low-carbon and zero-emission operative models.
- Propose actions to support and enable zero-emission vessels to operate effectively and look at ways in which alternative fuel supply, bunkering, and storage should be developed.
- Port operators will be trained on environmental, safety, and technical issues related to alternative fuels.
